Grant was the civil war general and later became the 18th president of the United States. His home is one of the most popular places in the US, it is located at 500 Bouthillier St, Galena. The house today will take you to the exact same house of 1865. It was gifted by the local townspeople to Ulysses S. Grant Home on his victorious return from the civil war. This house was built from 1859 to 1860.

The Galena & U.S. Grant Museum

Start your tour by experiencing Ulysses S Grant working life at the leather shop in Galena & U.S. Grant Museum. This museum is located at a distance of a mile from the Ulysses S. Grant Home. You will be amazed to know that the museum has restored from the tiniest of Grant’s things to the grandeur ones. From his cigar butts to 3-D holograms, to his original items to a lot of things related to his early history.

Make sure to examine things with careful attention as you explore Grant’s house and the museum. You will be jubilant with the detailing and the restoration. One thing that will catch your attention of the American treasure is the famous Thomas Nast’s painting from 1895. The huge peace and union picture that 9 feet tall and 12 feet wide along with the flag that the Galena soldiers proudly raised after capturing Vicksburg will give you goose bumps.

This place is managed and maintained by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency as the U.S. Grant Home State Historic Site.

Ulysses S. Grant Home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Activities:

The museum throws a grant party every year before the weekend of April 27th (Grant’s Birthday). They organize fun activities for kids, battle reenactments, and an old-time pie auction. You can come here during this time and enjoy the joyful moments.

What to expect:

Ulysses S. Grant Home is open from Wednesday to Sunday from 9 am to 4.45 am. There is no charge for admission for the tour but you can donate as per your wish. It will take from 1 to 2 hours to cover the whole campus. Make sure to be reach here 10 minutes before your scheduled time for this place.
