Brookfield Zoo

Brookfield Zoo is considered as one of the best zoos in the United States. The zoo gets 2.3 million visitors annually. Being a member of the Chicago Zoological Society, Brookfield zoo is on the forefront of the conservation and animal research. The mission of the zoo says “Inspiring conservation leadership by connecting people with wildlife and nature” and it has stayed true to its mission. The zoo is set on 216 acres and is located just 12 miles west of Chicago.

 

Attractions

The Animals

Meet some of the world’s most beautiful and endangered big cats including African lions, Amur leopards, and snow leopards. Visitors may also explore the wonder of Asia from clouded leopards to plans and insects that live in the rainforests. Large tanks will take visitors to the ocean life while smaller ones will offer a close look to the world’s smallest creatures.

Parks and Fountains

There are about four water fountains to check out in the Brookfield zoo. After enjoying the view at the fountains, kids can enjoy at the great playgrounds. You will love the fact that the playgrounds are labeled by age so that the little kids can play away from the rough and tumble kids. Have fun at the Carousel before leaving the zoo.

Australia House

This area resembles the Down Under. There is a brightly colored emerald tree boa around a branch at the Australia House. Also, there is a pair of echidna’s nose about in a dirt pile and free flying Rodriques fruit bats soaring overhead and a mob of kangaroos.

Important Facts

  • In 1937, a giant panda moved to the Brookfield zoo. It was the first panda that lived in US.
  • In 1943 the zoo struggled to raise money as a result of low attendance due to war. Therefore, the zoo decided to sell the animals to the citizens.
  • The zoo has around 450 species of animals.

What to Expect

All the members of your group should bring masks due to current COVID-19 situation. There are two parking lots at the Brookfield – The North and the South. Visitors having zoo membership gets free parking in the North. Brookfield is one of best family and budget friendly places. There are plenty of picnic tables and benches near every exhibit. There are carts everywhere so that you can purchase some snacks.

Activities

The main focus of the zoo is on education with detailed display about the animal being viewed. No need to say there are lots of fun activities also like face painting, animal encounters, and crafts to keep the kids fully engaged. Moreover, some lucky kids get the chance to spend the night at the zoo with the Chicago’s Zoological Society’s Sleepover Safari. Kids can walk through the zoo at night and participate in the special activities led by the camp counselors.

Plan your Visit

Every person must have a pre booked ticket purchased online through the online ticket portal. It is also advised to arrange the parking at the same time. No walk in guests is permitted. Bring stroller for your kids if your kids get tired. Bring lots of water and cooling towel along if you have one.
