Shedd Aquarium

The Shedd Aquarium is an indoor aquarium in Chicago, Illinois. Here, you will not only find about 32,000 species of sea life but one-of-a-kind experiences like penguin encounters, shark feeding, and even the chance to become a ‘Trainer of the Day’. The Shedd aquarium gets about 2.5 million visitors a year on average making it the most visited aquarium in the United States. It has been designated as National Historic Landmark and has received many awards for the best exhibits.

Attractions

Caribbean Reef

Head towards the Caribbean Reef and get a 360-degree view of the aquatic life within. Caribbean Reef is one of the first permanent exhibits that was set up in 1971, with 90, 000-gallon water tank. The Caribbean Reef is abode to the bright-eyed Nickel, a rescued sea turtle, bonnethead sharks, stingrays, and many more. You can also enjoy diving sessions between 12 PM to 3 PM daily.

Waters of the World

You can travel the world in 77 habitats at the Waters of the World. This is one of the oldest permanent exhibits in the Shedd Aquarium that has different aquatic habitats from rivers, oceans, and tropical wetlands. Meet hundreds of amazing animals like seahorses, starfish, spider crabs, and blue iguana, etc. The aquarium even contains Map turtles and river otters.

Amazon Rising

Experience the exotic journey in the Amazon which is home to one-third of all living beings. Watch out for Green Anacondas, Asian Arawana, Red-bellied piranhas, three species of River rays, and Dwarf caimans. This exhibit spans around 8600 sq feet and gives a walkthrough of forest recreation. The exhibit also shows how creatures adapt to the rising and falling water level in Amazon.

Activities

4-D experience is also available at the Shedd Aquarium. This can be really amazing for kids. One can feel the water sprays, bubble, and shaking seat during this 15 minutes experience. Visit Polar Play Zone with kids where they can jump into the penguin suits. Enjoy a live demo where a scuba diver jumps in and feeds the animals. The diver also interacts with the observers during the presentation which is exciting for the kids to see.

What to expect

Purchase your aquarium tickets online prior to your visit so you don’t have to stand in a long queue. Go to Shedd Aquarium’s official website for purchasing the passes. The Shred Aquarium offers valet parking for around $20. No dedicated parking is available for the visitors but there various parking lots available around the museum. General admission for Adults is about $40 USD and for kids is $30 USD.
