Columbian Park Zoo

The Columbian Park Zoo is the second oldest zoo located at Columbian Park, Lafayette, Indiana. It houses various animals like foxes, lynx, skunks, deer, pelicans, prairie dogs, and a wolf. Currently, the zoo accommodates around 200 animals of approximately 90 species. Not only animals but it also comprise of playgrounds, picnic areas, a walking trail, and a baseball stadium for the sake of visitors.

 

The original animals housed at the zoo in America’s area include barn owl, turkey vulture, black-tailed prairie dogs, Galapagos tortoise, and bald eagle.

On the other hand, in the Australian area at Columbian Park Zoo, you can witness an emu, kookaburras, galahs, and Guinea Singing Dogs in the NGSD Exhibit.

 

Attractions: 

  1. Fountain and Entry Plaza: There is aforty-two-inch solid granite sphere supported by a water base that displays a map of the world. This sphere rotates on the same axis as earth and a slight touch will start rotating it in another. It is a popular attraction to greet the visitors here.

The next attraction is a meandering river in which you can witness seven sculptures from each of the seven continents: a bear cub, platypus, orangutan, penguin, caiman, gecko, and baby elephants. Moreover, there is also a sphere fountain that is a great attraction to visitors.

 

  1. Historic Animal House: Built-in 1928, the animal house of Columbian zoo housed a variety of animals from small birds up to an elephant. Currently, it is not in working condition but provides housing to the off-exhibit animals. Alongside the animal’s house, you can find animals like gibbons, spiders, monkeys, and porcupines.

 

  1. Butterfly Garden: At one side of the zoo adjacent to the historic Animal House you will find a Butterfly Garden. It is home to a variety of Indiana native and North American butterflies. The garden comprises three main areas named Butterfly Sculpture Garden (an outdoor garden), Butterfly Bog (home to butterfly habitats), and Butterfly Garden Party (seasonal exhibit).

 

Activities: At the zoo, a variety of education programs are performed throughout the year. These programs are based on the theme world’s wildlife. You can participate in the programs and get to know many things about wildlife. Also, visitors can enjoy a butterfly garden, petting zoo, Public Art, and a “Wild Tykes Play Zone”. Those who want to take some souvenirs with them can purchase from the gift shop.

 

Plan a visit: The zoo is opened seasonally so make your plan accordingly. It is closed from October to mid-April. During peak season from May to Aug the opening hours are 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and during the off-peak season the zoo is opened from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission to the children of 2 years and under are free and $2.00 charges for people above age 3 years.

 

What to expect: At the zoo, various festive and annual events are held. If you come on the day of those special events you will enjoy double.
